Year Of Project: Specific

Nothing gets Monday off to a better start than the sense of accomplishment that comes from setting a goal.

If you tuned in yesterday - February 12 - than you know I posted a short teaser about the work we will be doing this week. Forty-three people have joined the House of Shine's Year Of project - 43 people who have set their sights on doing something big in 2012. It might be putting themselves first, rediscovering what they are passionate about, getting financially secure, reconnecting with friends, spending more time doing art, or, in my case, finding peace.

If you are not one of our "registered' 43, you can participate anyway by just following along.

Today we plunge right into Step #1 of setting a SMART goal. Make it specific.

The nice thing about setting a specific goal is that you know when you are finished.

The year 2012 is my Year of Peace and one specific goal I am going to set, among others, is learning how to meditate. Learning to meditate is specific and because of that it is more effective than stating something general such as "Become more calm" or "Slow down and smell the roses".

One year from now, I will have either learned how to medidate or I won't. Either way I will know if I was successful. My certainty about success would be harder to achieve with a goal as general "becoming more calm" or "slowing down".

Now for you. What project have you committed to and what is, at least, one specific goal that brings you closer to seeing it realized?

Jot it in your journal and/or share it with us in the Comment Section. We might even help refine it.

Shining off until tomorrow when we will make our specific goals measurable too.

It's my Year of Poetry and to date I have settled for being aware of when a word or phrase hits me to note it and write it down. I have written 16 poems to date so today's post is just what I need to make a spark to do more.

Following Sarah Kay's lead I will commit using her method of creating a list of ten things for a minimum of twice a month and post them to my art blog.

I will also commit to featuring a poem on my blog at least once week- Poem of the Day.

Oh- and when I say featuring a poem on my blog- I mean someone else's poetry as a means to be inspired. Does that make sense?

Mine is the Year of Organization... because I am frightfully disorganized. My SMART goal for this month is to get a planner, learn how to use it effectively, and implement it at work.

I will answer the top 11 interviewing questions so that I will be prepared for step one in my interviewing process with the company I want a job with.

Mine is the Year of S.E.L.F. I found the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting while I was searching for my 'year of' and decided to work it as an acronym as well.... but I am a creative soul... an over achiever and can't have just one goal.... so my SELF loosly means...
    S eeking, E xploring L earning and F inding.

But for me the S in S.E.L.F. could be Seeking balance, S earching for silliness, E could be E xploring walking paths or E xperimenting with a new hair color, L is for L earning new words and their definitions or L eaving well enough alone, F is for Finding an answer to a question or F ocusing on a task.

Just like someone recentlly asked Claudia how does she happen to come upon the chalk written message at the end of an unknown path..... she is more in-tune to things that SH!NE!!!

I am trying as my goal to be more in-tune to mySELF. One task I've met, is starting and working on an ART Journal, something I've never done before, and I'm FINDING it to be an EXCITING new way of doing art. The other day I was FRUSTRATED cleaning out my 'studio' and told mySELF to FOCUS.... and I got the job done!

The good thing is, I finally know that I am a complicated one! :)

My year is dedicated to showing more gratitude for the wonderful things/people in my life.

My specific goal is that I will document my gratitude through photographs. When I'm making my way through a day and am feeling grateful for a thing or person, I will document that gratitude through a photograph.

Really nice work and so early in the day, too! Keep it coming folks.

So far we seem to have gotten the hang of being specific.

Mine is very specific. We will have established an emergency savings account with one month's worth of expenses.
