Year Of: Get SMART

Here is to another month of pursuing your Year Of Project.  If you followed along in January then you have already thought about what need your new behavior is addressing, as well as all of the fun and enjoyable things that will come from successfully carrying out your Year Of project.

Now to February:

I love the old idea that the way we eat an elephant is one bite at a time, because it underscores the idea that all things are possible when we break them into small manageable parts.  The same thing is true of your Year Of Project.  Whether your commitment is to getting organized, living a year of courage, making change, or rediscovering yourself, all things are possible when we break our bigger goals into smaller, more manageable parts.

This month we are going to focus our energy on setting at least one SMART goal that will in some way advance the larger commitment we made to our Year Of Projects. SMART is an acronym for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

In the spirit of keeping things small and manageable, I thought we should tackle the five characteristics of a SMART goal in the same way we would eat an elephant - one bite at a time. This means you should check into the House of Shine's blog Monday through Friday of this week. Monday I will challenge you to consider a specific task you would like to acccomplish in relation to your Year Of project and on Tuesday we will explore ways to measure our progress. Wednesday is all about assuring your goal is achievable and on Thursday we will double check to make sure it is relevant. Friday we wrap things up by setting a time frame for our goal and Saturday and Sunday we will revel in the hard work we’ve done all week.

Get out your journals and prepare to make progress on your Year Of Project. I will see you tomorrow.

What happens if we achieve our objective early? I'm trying to fast track:0). Could even be there already. Focus now on making it lasting.

    MO...

Good question. Some of us came out of the gates ready to roll and others of us have eased into the new year warming up to our Year Of projects.

At the core of your Year of Project probably sits a deeper desire. If your year is the Year Of Organization, your deeper desire might be to feel calm and not rushed. If your project is the Year of Poetry, it might be to tap into your creativity more or to use poetry as a way of slowing down and noticing more of the world around you.

Either way, the idea behind the Year Of is to "be" with you project for the year. Rather than treat it like something to be checked off your to-do list, how about seeing how far you can go in the next 12 months?

For some of us, our years feel a little daunting. Things like the Year of Peace, the Year of the Journey, the Year of the Spark, or the Year of Forgiveness. These things are large, somewhat abstract projects and can certainly take a year to tackle. Even yesterday I heard Cheryl talk about how her Year of Love (left over from last year) continues on and that she is continuing to find ways of "feeding it."

I would say if it is February and you have already achieved your objective then maybe you can either dream bigger or explore in greater depth what regaining your mojo means to you and why it is important. It might just send you down another rabbit trail. Either way, we will all be curious for some kind of update.
