That's UnAmerican

There is nothing like a Monday-morning rant about things that don't Shine, to set your own work week on the right course. After two sub par experiences in less than 10 days, I have no choice.

The day after Thanksgiving, affectionately known as Black Friday (the busiest shopping day of the year), I went to the American Girl store to purchase my neice a holiday present. Almost through checkout, after having spent what was not an inconsequential amount of money, I asked the clerk for a gift box in which to package my neice's gift.

"I'm sorry, we are all out."

I don't want to sound too demanding or too highly strung, but "What?" It's noon on the busiest shopping day of the year; a day when you KNOW that droves of customers will be visiting your store to spend way too much money on clothes for dolls that, in many cases, have nicer wardrobes than their real life friends and you don't have a box in which I can present my gift?

That does not Shine.

The American Girl box is the same to a five or six year old girl as the light blue Tiffany box is to a grown woman. The gift simply looses oompff when it has to be presented in a generic gift box, a recylced shipping box, or an old boot box from the top of my closet. It just does.

Not to mention, it's a little like running a race and then stopping short just before the finish line.

You've developed a product that has a cult-like following,

designed little girl clothes to match their favorite doll's clothes,

built massive stores, fully equipped with hair salons and restaurants, just so little girls can treat their dolls to a day out on the town,

and you can't make sure there are enough boxes in stock, so that (1) I get to feel great about the gift I am giving and (2) you get to reinforce the branding you've worked so hard to create?

Really?

Poorly done, American Girl. Poorly done.

And you, Soft Surroundings, don't even get me or my husband started.

Your turn. Visit the comment section and rant or rave about your last shopping experience.

Shining off until...

Not a shopping thing but I'm having an admissions problem. They promised results in first week of December. Nothing yet. Now they say in the mail this Friday. This is supposedly due to a surprising number of applicants. The pool is finite, as only x number of people can apply. If they don't want to plan for 100% participation, fine. But they have years of historic data that should tell them about how many to expect. Another option? Tell everyone results on 12/16 and if they are out early, no complaints. The big issue is for the students not accepted. They will have five school working days to get new letters of recommendations, write a new essay, etc. before the deadline. The real kicker? A staff member told me that they did this to avoid the nasty phone calls from parents. *sigh*

I don't like 'fake', but I'm learning how to do it.

I must truly admit that so far, all my shopping trips and outtings for the holidays have been surprisingly better than I expected. I am lucky enough to shop during the week and I have been trying to be out and home by 11 am.

I gladly say 'hello'... but the "Hi how are ya", never so much... but I've realized that is the typical American greeting these days... (like you're welcome is now... No Problem).... from the postal clerk to the Michael's check out clerk.... if I take a moment and pause, look them in the eye and say... fine, thank you.... "How are you today?".... my transactions have been wonderful. I engage in a bit of small talk (if time and lines allow) and I walk out of the place feeling that I made their job a 'bit' easier....(without complaining or whining etc)

I really don't expect that much anymore, and am pleasantly surprised when I get service that seems to go above and beyond.

Claudia, you have a 'right' to be angry....let's turn that boot box into the best 'copy' of an American Girl box.. Aunt Claudia style .... how can I help you cre8te that?

Oh my goodness! My first thought was what if Tiffany's ran out of boxes! Ayh!

Let's see, I bailed on shopping one Saturday afternoon before Thanksgiving because I freaked out in the parking lot, driving around looking for a spot and every slow person in the world was in front of me. And then there was so much traffic I couldn't get home. I was in full panic attack mode. But, the good news is that this very morning, I mailed my gifts off to my South Texas family. They won't have to wait until June of 2012 to get their gifts! Yay Scrooge! :-) I've done some online shopping but still have more to do. I was planning on doing a lot of when my boys were gone on their trip to Park City but that has been cancelled so this coming weekend is it for me. Oh my!

Saturday we went to Walmart for a few items. I geared myself up for the craziness. We got in one line and then Drew suggested another one so we moved. It didn't look like she had that much left but still...Big mistake. The lady in front of had her armful of ads from other stores price matching, then her coupons, then her multiple payments. Deep breaths. Happy thoughts. We had to wait forever but I didn't freak out and leave my items on the conveyor belt so I'll call the trip successful.

Yes, what if Tiffany's ran out of boxes? No one would think that was ok.

Heather, thanks for sharing the link to the story about Grand Rapids. Now that's a city that shines!
