Boo Hoo Hoo

The sum total of my weekends as a kid is reduced to my memory of the Friday Night Crazies (FNC).

By definition Friday Night Crazies were the night of the week when my sisters and I would:

Get to eat spaghetti for dinner

Take baths then zip ourselves into cozy sleeping bags and

Huddle around our t.v. while watching The Brady Bunch and Partridge Family in back to back episodes.

Life didn't get any better than that!

I don't know exactly how many FNCs we logged during our childhood.  I suspect it was 10-12 Friday nights a year for the three years my dad taught SAT Prep courses and came home later than usual. But that's not the point.

The point is this: Friday Night Crazies (all 30-36 of them) are remembered as an every-weekend occurrence precisely because they happened so infrequently and the memories are so prized.

It's the same reason we remind our partners, longingly, about ALL the fun and romantic things he/she used to do when were dating. We remember and cherish those memories precisely because they weren't every day occurrences.

Prized memories, when held up against the backdrop of everyday life, will inevitably stand out and be remembered.

I'm pretty sure I'm cooking up an annual memory for my kids that ten or twelve years from now - when all is said and done - will rival my fondest memories of FNC.

Life doesn't get any better than that!

We unfortunately did not have anything. I think my girls would say girls night out at the b and b would be their memory. The boys would probably say the early morning breakfasts at Bob Evans.

I loved Thanksgiving growing up because all my aunts, uncles and cousins would come to my grandparents house and it was a long weekend of eating, playing games and being a part of something special. We also gathered in the summer and have been going to the same river spot since I was a tween. Every now and then the family will decide on a different location but going to the river is now something that my boys look forward to every year.

Something around the house though- they always mention pumpkin seeds at Halloween time.

I love the annual photos of you guys Boo-ing. So cute.

I love the BOOing game! We haven't been as consistent with it as you are, Claudia, but I have tried to get others to do it - we even BOOed all of the hall directors one year and heard it swept through most of the RAs as well.

Movies on Christmas Day - it only happened for a few years when I was in HS and my siblings were in College, but Christmas Day always ended up being a little boring once the morning was over, so we would load up and go to the theater to catch a flick. I wish we could do that now with our kids - but we have a plethora of family gatherings to get to!

As the beneficiary of one of this year's BOOs I have to say that you've created a memory for Lily! She was so excited to see what was inside.

For us I hope it is Saturday morning trips to have coffee with the whole family or our long family walks to the park every weekend.

I have so many... I was a lucky kid... the outdoor theatre in our town was 2 blocks away... I don't know how often we went, but I remember the swing set (real metal) seemed like it was 20 feet high, and we would go early in the daylight to play before the double features (in our pjs). My mom always made great buttered and salted popcorn on the stove and she would put it in huge paper shopping bags and you'd see the butter dripping out.... and it would be the only time we got soda pop, from a bottle that you had to use a real bottle opener! We brought our pillows and fell asleep before the 2nd show!

I don't know what the best memory is for my kids... I hope there are lots... we boo'd people when we lived in Tennessee (nothing like Claudia's boo-ing... a simple cut out paper ghost with a tiny sticker bag of Halloween treats and a cute saying to pass on to another neighbor).... it's so great to be an awesome mom when they were 3 & 5.... back then they thought anything I did was exciting and fun ~ especially when we did it in cognito!!!

Is it cheesy to say that reading today's comments warmed my heart?

They did. I love the stories and simplicity of our memories. It is such a powerful reminder, in this fast paced life, of what is really important.

Claudia....you are one great Mom. The gift you give to your children is memories. They will pass it on and be great Dads, because of a Mom like you. Hope you are doing well. Your often in my thoughts.
