It's That Time...

What kind of ritual would it be, if suddenly High, Low, Aha came to a screeching halt just because we tweaked our blog's format a little bit?

Though I have no idea how many of you are still around to enjoy our community's monthly ritual, I am committed to keep it going. If for no other reason than it is the perfect way for us to check in with one another and stay connected on life's ups and downs.

If you are stumbling on to our site for the first time, there are some things you ought to know:

We've been around for four years

We are a fun community of people who are committed to teaching and celebrating Shine.

Shine is our way of describing excellence - people and things that are head and shoulders above the rest.

We think our monthly ritual Shines, because it reinforces and celebrates the spirit of community.

And because it is so simple anyone can participate.

Here is how: Simply visit our comment section and tell us three things about your last month.  First, what was the best thing(s) that happened to you since July 18? Second, what was the worst thing(s) that happened to you since July 18?  And third, what is something(s) you have learned since July 18?

Shining off until...

High(s): An unexpected trip to Pebble Beach with my husband; lots of visitors to our house over the past month; enjoying the class I am teaching; and today is my mother's birthday.

Low(s): My uncle is not doing well and it is especially hard on my dad; and lots of mosquitos in Florida.

Aha: Self confidence is at the root of so many dysfunctions; lots about website development; and as hard as it was to change my House of Shine format, I am living to tell about it. Things are never as hard as we imagine them to be.

High: Where do I even begin? This past month was so good! Pardon the ninth grade girl speak but like OMG I'm in L-O-V-E! My love tank is overflowing. I had a good month with my boys. My mom came into town and she met Chris. I also met his parents, brother and brother's family. I purchased the best birthday present for myself! I love it! It's a five foot metal rooster named Norman! He's in my backyard and he's full of whimsy and charm and he makes me laugh every time I see him. Best pet ever. My ex-mother-in-law used to make me a blueberry stack cake for my birthday and this year I found the recipe and I made it for myself. So good though yall know my cake skills- it was a little bit on the Dr. Seuss caddywhampus side but it tasted DEEEElicious.

Low: My cousin's 28 year old daughter died in a car accident.

Aha: This is always the hardest one to recognize. I'm sure I had an Aha in the last month but what was it? How about this- I read the book The Five Love Languages this past month (could have been overlapping the month before) and it has opened my eyes to how we perceive and feel love from others and how we can choose to love someone else unconditionally. This extends to our children and coworkers.

High: vacation in Hilton Head, SC, para sailing, taking Kyle to college (yesterday) Holly getting her drivers' license

Low: taking Kyle to college(yesterday), mis-communication and trying to provide guidance as a mother to a independent teenage daughter, not working outside the home to gather balance and fullfillment

Aha: sometimes people just need to vent, to be validated for who they are.
I love love love Pinterest for ideas and quotes:
Sometimes I pretend to be normal, but it gets boring. So I go back to being me!

HIGH - seeing family, making myself indispensable at work, narrowing focus for non profit, Hi-HIGH - supporting and assisting my girlfriend with breast feeding concerns she had about starting back after having an infection. She knows the importance of it, and really worked to make it work and they are bonded closer than ever she and her sweet baby boy. So high/happy that I could help! (I remembered things Robin said on her blog - I was so calm through the process, totally surprised me. THANKS Robin!!); great training walks with 30WALK'ers and building some great friendships!
    Low: stress
AHA - with school starting, it is more important to be open and available 'all the time' for questions and concerns that come my way - Make time and take time. :)

High: Hmmm...Charlotte is walking (which is a bittersweet high), anticipating a visit from two good friends this fall (Robin in September and Laura in October!), Lily is starting to pick up on how to read so it is fun to watch her figure things out.

Low: Heading into Bal's travel season so the girls and I will be missing him a lot over the coming months. Also had some work woes.

Aha: Cleaning my office makes work feel easier to complete. Clean office, clean mind.
