Chicken or Egg?

During an afternoon of shopping with women who are visiting from out of town, I was drawn to a shop with a yellow door.

I asked the friendly clerk ringing up my order, if I could look more closely at the employee name badge hanging around his neck.

Guiding Principles
Every Guest, Every Time
Focus on Today, plan for tomorrow, and prepare for the future
To think, to work with, and to expect only the best.
Foster a shared responsibility for the wellbeing of our staff, guests, business, and community.
It's my job to be better than the rest and that makes the day for me.

Values
Honesty, trust, integrity, respect, fun, and communication

On the way home I thought about how lucky Joe is to work at a place that not only states their Guiding Principles and Values, but that chooses those particular Guiding Principles and Values as most important to their business.

I imagine a lot of people would like to work at a shop that expects you to shine.

Here's my question about Joe. Was pleasant and hardworking Joe drawn to his job because of the store's Guiding Principles and Values or does Joe shine because of the store's Guiding Principles and Values?

Shining off until tomorrow...

I don't know about Joe, but I am drawn there based on the principles! To determine the answer I'd have to ask a few questions about Joe specifically. Did he know about the store before working there? Did he answer an ad? Or like you did he shop there and become intrigued? For me, I did not know anything up until about 2 minutes ago that this store existed but I want to know more now about the store, the company and it's people!!! Are those principles and values ingrained and so much a part of Joe that he doesn't 'have to work' at the job but just shines because that is who he is? I think it is the principles and values that grow within us that make us more shine-y. Have fun Claudia!!

what if it is both.. Joe was drawn to the place for reasons unknown to him... only to find out that the place drew him there knowing it could bring it the best in him and him in it?

    Wow. I'm thinking I need a name tag! :)

If Joe didn't already shine and have some of those core values and principles himself the store would not have hired him. If the store didn't have those core values and principles Joe would not have chosen to work there.

    Birds of a feather... :)

Cheryl beat me to it. I think we look for a job that is congruent with our core values and if the company is truly living their values they look for employees that are congruent with what they are striving to create.

Sounds like this little toy shop has it just right!

I love the last line... "It's my job to be better than the rest and that makes my day."

Doesn't that just scream of Shine?

P.S. It is not a sun-shiney day in Florida. Lots of rain and storms. Ugh.

Chaotic! You made me think of "The Alchemist"...“The Boy didn’t know what a person’s ‘destiny’ was… It’s what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young knows what their destiny is.” page 22. I think it was a bit of both :). LOVE IT! This just looks like a SHINY, happy place :).
