Yellow Envelope Project: 2011

Nothing underscores the Principles of Shine more than a high school graduation celebration. It is inspiring - maybe even overwhelming - to watch young people walk across the stage and into a future that is big and bright and - with a little luck - filled with Shine.

Older people, like me, welcome the chance to participate in events like these. Not because we believe high school graduations commemorate the pinnacle of a student's success. No. In fact, we and most high school students realize that graduating from high school is merely the beginning.

Instead, we happily participate in these ceremonies because we realize how important it is to gather together, in force, to celebrate human potential. Yesterday my family and I celebrated the graduation of a young man who we have known since he was eight years old. He is smart and hard working and he is eager to get out in the world to make a difference. Our participation in his graduation was our way of saying, "We believe in you. We are proud of what you did and, as importantly, we look forward to all you will do."

There is hope in these events.  A constant recharging of the batteries that power change.

Join me this week, in recognizing a young person who is graduating. It could be graduating from high school or college, but it might also be a young person who is graduating from one stage of his life to another. Participating is easy. Write him or her a short note of congratulations.  Applaud the time and dedication they have demonstrated to date and challenge them to exhibit the same enthusiasm for pursuing a life that shines - a life where their contribution makes a corner of the world a better, brighter place to live.

Seal your letter in a yellow envelope and mail it to his or her address sometime before next Monday. You decide whether or not to include your return address. I think I'll make my letter anonymous. And, if you still have power in your battery, visit us in the Comment Section and tell us about your best (or worst) graduation adventure

Shining off until tomorrow...

Hands Down... best ever graduation memory for me was watching my son cross that stage after 5 1/2 years of hard work and many hours at Texas State. Since he was a good student most of the work was the time spent working in order to come out of the ordeal only owing about $40K in loans. He is (as are many, I think) wondering if it was all worth it since the economy & job market are what they are right now. As someone who never got to walk across that stage, I assure him it is and that life will eventually be all that he wants it to be... he just has to keep on keeping on, pushing through, never giving up. I am still so very proud of him. And this is a great idea!! I will send all the recent graduates in my life a yellow envelope letting them know that I am thinking of them and all their hard work to get that sheepskin.

    Quiet in here today.

I don't really remember much from my high school graduation other than I remember I graduated and I was ready to go to college. My college graduation was fun as I shared it with dinner with my parents and some of my best girlfriends. I didn't have a clue as to what I was actually going to do with that fancy art degree! And, I would like to take this moment to thank my parents for paying for it!

Bummer! I just lost everything I wrote...try, try again!

My high school graduation was uneventful but the celebration after...fun. My family took me to Cozumel and we had a great time. My college graduation was a celebration as Robert (my hubby) planned a surprise party with all my close family and friends. Such a wonderful memory...can't believe it was 14 years ago :/. Do you think they should have pre-school graduations? I am on the fence.
