Growing Like a Weed

The House of Shine fervently asserts that inside everyone is a little shine, so you can imagine how much we love a website that believes the same thing about days of the year.

This month we have busily worked our way through the Brownielocks.com list of March holidays, each day showing appreciation for something. Holidays have been as simple as honoring your name (March 7) or lips (March 16) or as important as honoring the contributions of programs such as the Peace Corp (March 3), Salvation Army (March 10), or Girl Scouts (March 12).

Today, dandelions.

It is actually Weed Appreciation Day, but I want to talk about dandelions because they are yellow (And, yes I did verify that it was "Weed" Appreciation Day, not "Weed" Appreciation Day) .

Google dandelions if you want to read up on factoids such as: their culinary and medicinal uses; how they are used to make wine; and that they are host to a festival in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

My focus is on what makes this weed shine.

Dandelions, like most weeds are strong and tenacious. They grow thickly where they are not wanted and, often, in spite of gardner's obsessive attempts to destroy them. Weeds - dandelions included - are tough.

Here is what I really love. Dandelions have something called papplus which functions sort of like a parachute. Papplus carry dandelion seeds (achene) through the air and over long distances. It is this relationship between the papplus (the parachute) and the achene (the seed) that allows this weed to, literally, be found world wide.

While others laugh at the idea of celebrating Weed Appreciation Day I actually get it.

In fact, I like to think we have something in common with dandelions and not just because dandelions are yellow. I think we have something in common, because in a world where our spirits can feel under attack by the tragic events in Japan and the horrors of the middle east, and where a lagging economy combined with rising prices gives us plenty to worry about, we - like dandelions - are strong and tenacious.

And because, each day I commit to providing the seed and you commit to being the parachute who helps carry our message through the air and over long distances.

Go forth today and be a dandelion. Happy Weed Appreciation Day.

Shining off until tomorrow...

One thing that amazes me is how kids LOVE dandelions until adults tell them that they should think differently. How crazy are we?

I have a new respect and perspective on dandelions! Love it. And Robin, I agree - you are so right!

I don't mind a dadelion salad in my mixed greens.... from the local produce... not from my back yard.... since I have two very suspicious doggies.

I love a sea of yellow dandelions in someone ELSES yard..... at times it can be very pretty...... not in my own yard.... we got Tru Green lawn service... and any time I spot one of the weeds in between treatments... it is so fun to get on my hands and knees and pull up those suckers from the roots.

Nice point, Robin. Dandelions aren't the only thing that kids are able to see beauty in that we aren't, are they?

The other day my kids picked a bunch of dandelions from the house next store and put them in the mailbox for my post-lady. They thought it was a bouquet.

I, for one, will appreciate dandelions in a different way from here on out.

Dandelions. I'm torn. There is something romantic and dreamy about blowing all those little seeds into the air and making a wish as a kid. Then you become a homeowning adult and they suddenly are not very romantic and dreamy. They're more of pain in your neck.

Yes, they are hardy and strong and spread like wild fires!

I get it. And I can definitely celebrate us being strong like them but I still don't want them in my yard. :)

My profile picture on FB is of my girls holding a bunch of dandelions. They were so proud of picking these for me. So sweet! Strong like a YELLOW weed...I am good with that :) I am with you Cheryl...I prefer them in the yard next door. Happy Monday!

Funny story about dandelions...when I was about 16 (yes I typed that right 16) we were driving down the road and I said to my Mom..."oh look the sunflowers are blooming". My Mom asked me "What did you just say?" and I said "the sunflowers are blooming" . That's right at the age of 16 I didn't realize that they weren't called sunflowers because my Mom thought is was cute that I called them sunflowers when I was a child and she never corrected me. Evidently when I was really little I would stand on the porch and cry when they mowed the lawn because they were cutting down the "sunflowers".

I knew that story, Heather, but I still laugh when I hear it. That's a sweet memory.
