Yellow Envelope Project: You Tell Me

The House of Shine is five days into our commitment to celebrate a new holiday each day for the whole month of March. And with so many worthy holidays to chose from, there is no way we could stop now.

I went middle of the road with the selection of today's holiday.  Saint Piran's Day is probably a very worthy holiday, but I don't know the zip code for heaven and our yellow envelopes would probably just get lost.  Unlike Saint Piran, Potty Dance Day never had a hope or a prayer of being selected. There is nothing about potty training that makes me want to dance or mail yellow envelopes.

That left USA Memory Day.

Except there is no such thing as USA Memory Day. I searched the internet high and low and could not find a single stitch of information about Memory Day. Memorial Day, yes. But that's May and this is March.

Instead, we will give our own meaning to Memory Day and, ironically, the Yellow Envelope Project will be the perfect way to celebrate.

This week send your yellow envelope to a person who has given you the gift of a great memory.

It could be someone like Mrs. Dunn, my friend's mother, who periodically took us out of school so we could have picnics during lunch hour. Or, it could be an old boyfriend like Wayne Slocum who took me on one of my favorite dates of all time. Or someone more recent, someone in your adult life. In that case, mine might go to Amy, a friend who I don't see nearly enough. Time spent sharing our dreams over coffee at Starbucks, eating cupcakes, or making packages will forever rank as some of my favorite adult memories.

If you tuned in earlier this week for the post labeled, Two Words, then today's suggestion should sound an awful lot like sending one of your 365 thank yous. But with a twist.

Write your letter of gratitude to someone who has given you the gift of a special memory.  Sign the letter, since you will know the recipient, and even feel free to use your own return address. This week your letter doesn't have to be anonymous.

But. I will still ask that you seal it in a yellow envelope (or a white envelope decorated with yellow markers and stickers) and that you mail it before next Saturday when we meet again to recognize another worthy recipient. And. I would really love it if you would consider using a line or two of your note to explain the Yellow Envelope Project and maybe even the web address where they could learn more, www.yellowenvelope.com or www.houseofshine.com.

One more thing. Visit us in the comment section and tell us about the person to whom you mailed your letter and about the memory you found so special. We'll pick one of their names and surprise him (or her) with our signature Shine shirt.

Shining off until Monday.

What a great idea! Today my thank you note / yellow envelope will go to my friend, Karen Dies. We worked together for many years and she was always my "go-to" girl, my friend who could make me laugh and forget my problems, and we have so many good memories. She moved to Graham, Texas several years ago and we don't get to see each other nearly as often as we'd like, but when we do get together it's like we pick right up where we left off! She's the youth minister at their church, and I know the Yellow Envelope Project would be something she will definitely be interested in hearing about. She is already such an encouraging person, full of enthusiasm and always in a good mood. I get the biggest smile whenever I remember some of our good times!! ~Kathy Emerson

Thanks for starting the day off right, Kathy. Karen sounds deserving of your yellow envelope.

Provided I can track down his address, I will send my yellow envelope to Bob Younger. He was a division head for years at the summer camp where I spent many summers working. He loved his job at the camp and it showed in the enthusiasm he brought to his work. He loved the outdoors and took great pleasure in teaching us how to build campfires, tie knots, shoot archery, and lots more. One of my favorite childhood photos is a candid photo he took of me working with my campers.

Anybody else want to jump in and tell us who they might mail their yellow envelope to?

Interesting how things go in a circle. What is the word? Not karma and not de ja vu... but when a lot of things have a commonality? Ironic??? Really, seriously... I'm looking for the word...anywho...

In today's mail, I sent a newly created Photo Shop digital card with matching YELLOW envelope. The theme this week in class was 'thank you' notes... go figure.... and they were yellow.... go figure. And we were told in class to mail them to someone special this week. My mother-in-law is my Indiana Sales Rep (hee hee).... one week ago I sent her a supply of misc. cards and she just opens her mail and shows people my cre8tive greetings!! in the post office (small town, everybody needs to go to the local PO Box to get their mail) and she made two sales. I thought everything really worked out nicely this week!
