Kreme of the Crop

Sometimes you search for an idea clever enough to surprise someone with a little shine.

Other times the idea is so clever, you spread shine just so you can share it with others.

Today’s post is about the latter.

Krispy Kreme has the market on donuts, in my mind.  I don’t know that they taste better than other brands, but I do know that the company shines at creating a sense of occasion.

Every six weeks or so, it seems they produce a seasonal donut.  Fall is marked by football-shaped donuts, iced with chocolate frosting and topped with white laces.  Halloween brings a combination of pumpkin shaped donuts with orange frosting and crème filled donuts, iced to look like spider webs.  The winter holidays are all about white icing atop snowman-shaped donuts and Valentine’s Day is celebrated with heart shaped donuts, frosted with white icing and dipped in red and pink sprinkles.

One donut is more clever than the next and each version creates in me a desire to share a dozen with someone I know.  Jack’s day care is often the recipient of my enthusiasm for these clever donuts, but last weekend Matthew, Jack, and I left the house early and took a different approach.  We ordered three-dozen Valentine’s donuts and delivered them to families for whom we are wishing a Happy Valentine’s Day.

Matthew picked Cheryl’s boys, Drew and JB; Jack wanted to deliver his dozen to cousin, “Frank-a-docious”; and I picked a thoughtful neighbor.  We taped simple cut-out hearts on top of the box, reading “Happy Valentine’s Day” and headed out on our mission.  Matthew in his pajamas and prized cowboy boots, Jack in his pajamas, tousled hair, and socks, and me in my pajamas and purple slippers.  We were a sight to behold as I pulled into the driveway and the boys jumped out to deliver the goods.  Our escapade looked a little less like a Great Caper and a lot more like a scene from the Keystone Cops.

Nonetheless, we had fun spreading shine and I like the idea of supporting the creativity and celebratory spirit of Krisy Kreme.

How about you?  Tell us about something you find so clever you look for ways to share it with others or just tell us how you intend to spread some shine this Valentine’s Day.

Shining off until tomorrow…

It's early and I can't sleep. I am waiting to see what the weather holds and how my day is going to play out. Tap...Tap...Tap...
But...now I want one of those CUTE and yummy donuts! I will have to pick some up for Azlynn's Valentine's party this Friday :). I usually like for the girls to make their Valentine's but with 22 kiddos in one class and 28 in another, I don't think they will be making them this year. Valentine's runs a close second to Christmas as my favorite holiday. I love the Brach's Cinnamon Jelly Hearts candy and I got the last bag Target had tonight. I have been on the hunt for a couple of weeks now. SCORE! They are soooo good. What are you all doing for your Valentine this year?

My new favorite thing that SHINES is the Hallmark recordable books and yes I LOOK for reasons to give one.
I'm not a huge Krispy Kreme fan, I'm sure they SHINE at creating fun donuts around a holiday but I really don't like the taste of their donuts...far too sweet. I like doughy donuts...you know the good old fashioned traditional yeast donut...YUM! My favorite place right now is the donut place that sits directly behind the kids' daycare it is called Happy Donuts and they too have fun donuts commemorating each holiday but more importantly they seem to really love what they do as a family. They always talk to Lily and throw in a donut hole or two extra in her little donut bag. She loves the donuts with star confetti on them.

For Misty...I don't really have any grand Valentine's plans this year. Last year we went to Central Market for dinner as a family(romantic huh?)

If I'm right I think you are staying home with your girls today...UT Arlington closed so now I'm just waiting on the road report to decide whether to take the girls to school...I'd love to have the whole day to catch up on housework.

My favorite thing that shine is the sun! Where the heck is it, dammit?

Anther snow day in north texas. This is verging on crazy.

I suppose the sliver lining is now we will have plenty of time to make all of our valentines.

Hello office. Yes, I'm at the office in uptown Dallas located 25 miles away from my home during inclement weather. No Valentine crafts for me.

I was awake but still in bed with the doorbell rang on Sunday morning. No way in hell I was getting up to see who it was. Not right away. I did finally mosey that way to find a box of donuts on my doorstep with hand writing I would recognize anywhere! :) I gobbled down two donuts with my coffee, packed the pretty heart ones up for the boys- they were at their dads house and donuts were enjoyed by all! Such a great surprise. I promptly went to the gym to work the calories off best I could.

It's a little busy at my desk so I'll come back and share my shining topic.

I'm saying this in my most lovely voice.... old married couple here, two almost adult children....

We used to make the most awesome valentine mailboxes because there was always competitions at elementary school. Hand made cards.... then all this 'holiday valentine' candy came about and you needed to add candy to the Valentine... or that special little card would be tossed a side like underwear as a Christmas present. In my room mom 'manual' I have H E A R T.... like Bingo, played with the conversation hearts. I have a big red heart pillow that says.... I love you.... instead of musical chairs... we play it like "HOT POTATO" in a circle you must pass it around to music, when the music ends, whomever is holding the heart.... is out of the game.... until a winner is declared. Then we'd take all of our valentines and with folded scrap paper, make it into a memory book. Make a cover for the book.... child's drawing and handwriting.... special sentiments inside from the teacher or mom... and put it away in there memory box to pull out.... someday. Oh, and I did face painting! Loved it when washable markers came out.... hearts and doodles.... some of the boy pulled up their shirts and I made Harley hearts on their arms... I love mom!!

Email me if you have any questions on how to recreate room mom fun-ness. <3 sh!ne

Fun ideas, Peggy. Some year when I take on the room mom thing, I will hire you as my consultant.

I love the idea that you used the valentines they received to create a memory book. I wonder if you could show us how. I never quite know what to do with all the valentines they receive and I feel bad throwing them away. Turning them into something functional like a memory book is a great idea.

    Heather,
Here's the post that I did about the bowling - it's at Brunswick.

There's a link in the post to print the coupons. You can print as many as you want.

If you are interested further in My Valentine Books, check out my blog where I just posted a few pictures and describe how the kids made their very own. Another idea, we made coupon books, good for one hug etc.... those were a big hit!
